Antenna that can charge smartphones

A research group at one of the universities of Massachusetts has begun to develop a method for generating electrical energy from surrounding electromagnetic waves. The prospects for this technology are incredible and in the future they will do without batteries, drawing on the necessary energy for gadgets only from Wi-Fi.

In essence, the signals transmitted over Wi-Fi are electromagnetic waves of a certain frequency that can be picked up by an antenna equipped with a rectifier diode. At the moment, scientists have learned how to get no more than 40 µW of energy in this way, which is very small for modern smartphones, but enough for small electrical appliances, such as microchips or medical implants.
